Caribbean All-Inclusive Packing List
The best all inclusive packing list for the Caribbean comes down to two things most lists skip: the dress code at the à la carte restaurants and the sunscreen rules on your island. Pack two or three swimsuits plus a cover that actually covers, at least one real dinner outfit (a dress or nice top with dressy sandals, not a cover-up and flip-flops), one all-white look if your resort holds a white party, and a zinc-based mineral sunscreen. The U.S. Virgin Islands bans sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene. Aruba bans selling oxybenzone sunscreens. Parks such as Xcaret in Mexico only let in mineral sunscreens. A zinc-only formula works in all three places. Everything else, from the drinks to the towels, is already included.

Why an all-inclusive needs its own packing list
At a regular beach hotel you can wander into town for dinner in whatever you swam in. At an all-inclusive, you eat every meal on the property, and the resort decides what counts as dressed. The buffet and beach grill are relaxed. The reservation-style restaurants are not. You also spend more hours in the sun because the bar comes to your lounger, so sun protection matters more here than on a city-and-beach trip.
Sandals, one of the best-known Caribbean all-inclusive brands, spells this out better than most. Its travel checklist gives average Caribbean temperatures of about 82–88°F by day and 70–75°F at night, which is why one light layer for the evening is worth packing. It also suggests one large suitcase plus a carry-on, two or three swimsuits with cover-ups, and keeping a swimsuit and sunscreen in your carry-on in case you arrive before the 3 p.m. check-in. That last tip is the one we would underline. Resorts often let you use the pool and bars before your room is ready, so your first afternoon only goes to plan if your suit is at the top of your carry-on, not locked in the bell stand.
The dress code that catches people out
Sandals’ FAQ and checklist describe two levels. Resort casual applies in casual restaurants and bars during the day: swimwear must be covered, and shirts and footwear are required. Resort evening applies in the à la carte restaurants at night. Women can wear dresses, rompers, or jeans with a nice top, with heels, wedges, or dressy sandals. Men need long pants, dress shirts, and closed-toe dress shoes. Sandals asks guests to skip swimwear, cover-ups, T-shirts, sleeveless shirts, sneakers, flip-flops, slippers, and hats at dinner.
Other resort brands set their own rules, so check yours before you pack. Many follow the same idea: covered up by day, dressed up at night. In practice, that means three kinds of outfits:
- Pool hours: swimsuits, plus a cover that fully covers your suit for the walk to the beach grill. A sheer skirt is fine at the pool, but a button-down shirt is a better pick for lunch indoors.
- Casual lunch and the buffet: the shirt over your suit, or shorts and a top, with sandals.
- À la carte dinner: a real outfit. For each dinner reservation, pack a dress or a nice top with trousers, plus dressy sandals. Count your reservations and pack one look for each, or two you can restyle with the same sandals.
Pack one all-white outfit
Some Caribbean resorts hold a weekly white party. Sandals lists its “White Night” in the same checklist, with a dessert spread built around chocolate, and recommends an all-white outfit for it. You do not need anything new. A white gauze shirt knotted over white trousers or a white skirt works, and so does a white sundress with metallic sandals. Ask the front desk which night it is, so you can save that outfit for it.
If you want help building evening looks that start at the pool, our pool to dinner outfit guide walks through the swaps.
Sunscreen rules by island
This is where an all-inclusive trip gets more complicated than it looks. Several Caribbean destinations have rules about which sunscreen ingredients are allowed, and they are not all the same rule:
- U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix). Act 8185 bans importing, selling, and possessing sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene, and the possession part applies to visitors. It also covers using them, and it took effect in 2020. In 2023 the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce reported that the territory’s consumer affairs agency was cracking down on retailers selling banned sunscreen. ReefLabel’s USVI summary has the full list.
- Aruba. Since July 1, 2020, Aruba has banned importing, selling, and giving away sunscreens with oxybenzone (Chambers and Partners explains the law). The law targets sales, not visitors’ own bottles, and octinoxate is not on the list. Even so, buying on the island limits your choices, so it is easier to pack a compliant tube. ReefLabel’s Aruba page keeps this up to date.
- Bonaire. Bonaire is often listed as having a legal ban, but we could not confirm one. The Island Council passed a motion in 2018 calling for an end to oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens. In 2021 a Dutch minister said a Bonaire ban would be desirable. The island’s marine park authority, STINAPA, asks visitors to avoid both ingredients. Treat it as a strong local request.
- Riviera Maya parks. If your Cancún or Playa del Carmen trip includes Xcaret, its admission page says only sunscreens made with titanium oxide or zinc oxide are allowed. On its blog, the park says it swaps other sunscreens at the entrance for one you can use during your visit.
The simple fix is a mineral sunscreen whose only active ingredient is zinc oxide. It meets every rule above, and its simple label makes it easy to check at a park gate. Keep a travel size in your carry-on: TSA’s liquids rule limits carry-on containers to 3.4 ounces (100 ml). Then let fabric do some of the work, with a UPF hat for the beach and a long-sleeve shirt for boat days. Our beach club etiquette and SPF guide covers how to apply sunscreen so it does not mark your suit.
Shop the Caribbean all-inclusive cart
We checked each listing below on Amazon the morning this went live. The cart works in layers: suits for the pool, a cover that passes the lunch rule, pieces for dinner, and sun protection that clears island rules. Sizes, colors, and stock change, so confirm yours before checkout.
Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Body Lotion, Travel Size
The sunscreen we would pack for any island on this list. The listing names zinc oxide (20%) as the only active ingredient and says it is made without oxybenzone and octinoxate. The 3 oz tube fits the carry-on rule, so it can ride in the bag you swim from on arrival day.
- Best for: Carry-on, beach days, and Xcaret-style park days
- Pair with: The UPF hat and a long-sleeve shirt
- Fit note: The listing says to reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and every two hours, and that a white tint at first is normal for this formula.
FLAXMAKER Black-and-White Bow One-Piece
Black with crisp white piping and an oversized bow across the bust, this is the suit that looks like an outfit at the swim-up bar. The listing describes it as going from pool to party, with removable soft cups and full lining.
- Best for: Swim-up bar afternoons and sunset photos
- Pair with: The gauze shirt for lunch, then trousers and the strappy sandals for dinner
- Fit note: Shell is 85% polyester and 15% spandex per the listing. Amazon notes it is often returned for a tight fit, so check the size chart.
ZAFUL Three-Piece Halter Bikini with Mesh Cover-Up Skirt
A true matching set: halter bikini, side-tie bottoms, and a long mesh skirt in the same print. The listing’s default is brown polka dot, but it comes in many prints. The skirt makes the set look finished on the walk to the beach bar. It is sheer, so think pool deck, not indoor lunch.
- Best for: Pool days and beach-bar walks
- Pair with: The SOJOS sunglasses and the gold clip
- Fit note: Top has removable pads and bottoms tie at the sides per the listing. At least one review calls the top small, so size with the chart.
Long-Sleeve Gauze Button-Down Shirt
The hardest-working piece in an all-inclusive suitcase. It covers your suit for the buffet and beach grill, gives your arms sun protection on a catamaran, and on white night it can go over white trousers, knotted at the waist or tucked in. It is shown in white, which is the color we would pick.
- Best for: The resort-casual lunch rule and white night
- Pair with: Any suit on this list, or white trousers for dinner
- Fit note: The listing’s description says 30% linen and 70% cotton, but its spec table lists cotton, polyester, and polyamide, so treat it as a light gauze shirt rather than pure linen. Amazon notes it is often returned for a loose fit.
GORGLITTER Strappy Flat Sandals
Sandals’ evening dress code lists dressy sandals for women, and these strappy flats look the part with no heel to wobble on along the garden paths. The variant shown is pale yellow; the listing also offers gold and metallic gold, which go with every outfit in this cart.
- Best for: À la carte dinners and white night
- Pair with: The bow one-piece under trousers, or a white dress
- Fit note: Faux leather with a slim platform per the listing. A few reviews mention slippery soles, so test them on smooth floors before your trip.
Kitsch Open-Shape Gold Metal Hair Clip
The easiest way to look dressed for dinner after a day in salt water and chlorine. Twist your hair up, clip it, and add the gold sandals. The listing describes a polished gold finish.
- Best for: Post-swim dinners
- Pair with: Every dinner outfit
- Fit note: Per the listing and reviews, it is all metal and on the small side, so it suits half-up styles or medium hair best.
Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat
Not a boutique straw hat, but it earns its place on excursion days. It is rated UPF 50+, folds flat, and has a neck cape and a chin strap for catamaran and snorkel trips. Leave it in your room at dinner, since hats are on the skip list for the evening dress code.
- Best for: Boat days, snorkel trips, and park days
- Pair with: The gauze shirt and the mineral SPF
- Fit note: Comes in two sizes with an internal sizing system per the listing.
SOJOS Polarized Rounded Square Sunglasses
Polarized lenses cut the glare off white sand and the pool, and these are cheap enough that losing them on a boat day will not ruin your trip. The listing says the UV400 lenses block UVA and UVB.
- Best for: Every day outdoors
- Pair with: Every suit on this list
- Fit note: Plastic frames with metal hinges per the listing, and they come with a pouch and a cloth.
