Maldives Packing List for the 25 kg Seaplane

A smart Maldives packing list is built around one number: 25 kilograms. That is the standard seaplane allowance per person on Trans Maldivian Airways, split into 20 kg of checked luggage and 5 kg of hand luggage, and the airline itself tells you to keep swimwear in the hand bag in case your suitcase lands on a later flight. So pack two or three swimsuits (one in your carry-on), a long-sleeve shirt and a knee-length layer for Malé and local islands, a packable UPF hat, a travel-size mineral sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses. Then dress for the island you are on: resort islands welcome swimwear, while local islands expect shoulders and upper legs covered.

The seaplane sets the rules for your suitcase

Most overwater resorts are reached from Velana International Airport in Malé by seaplane, speedboat, or a domestic flight plus a boat. On the seaplane, the limits are firm. Trans Maldivian Airways’ FAQ lists 25 kg per person (20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage), no single bag over 32 kg, no extra allowance for infants, and US$5 per kilo over the limit plus tax. Resorts repeat the same numbers in their own transfer policies; Hurawalhi’s transfer policy adds that luggage may travel on a later flight in extraordinary circumstances.

The detail that should change how you pack is in that same FAQ. TMA says bags occasionally arrive after the passenger, and it advises carrying medicines, clothing, and swimwear in your hand luggage for when you reach the resort. Seaplane transfers also run in daylight. The Centara Collection’s seaplane page lists transfers between roughly 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Hurawalhi notes its last seaplane usually leaves by about 5 p.m. If your long-haul lands late, you may spend a night near Malé before the hop, so the hand bag should hold one city-appropriate outfit too.

Speedboat and domestic-flight transfers can have different rules, so confirm with your resort before you shop. Either way, weigh your packed bag at home with a luggage scale; finding out at the seaplane counter that you are three kilos over is the least glamorous way to start a honeymoon.

What goes in the 5 kg hand bag

Five kilograms disappears fast once you add a laptop or a camera, so think of the hand bag as your first 24 hours in paradise:

  • Your best swimsuit and a cover. If the suitcase is late, you still swim the afternoon you arrive.
  • A long-sleeve shirt. It covers your shoulders in Malé, cuts the glare on the seaplane dock, and doubles as a beach cover.
  • Travel-size sunscreen. TSA’s liquids rule caps carry-on liquids at 3.4 ounces (100 ml) per container on U.S. departures, and local operator Secret Paradise reminds visitors to follow 100 ml limits on Maldives flights, so pick a tube that fits.
  • Sunglasses, a packable hat, and medications. Everything you would miss on day one.

Resort island or local island: two dress codes, one suitcase

The Maldives has two kinds of beach days, and they ask for different clothes. On a resort island, swimwear is the uniform. Outside the resorts, the UK government’s Maldives travel advice asks visitors to be sensitive to local dress standards, including on beaches used by locals: shoulders covered, no short or tight-fitting shorts, and arms and upper legs covered when bathing. It also notes that nudism and topless sunbathing are not allowed anywhere, including on resort islands. The U.S. State Department’s advisory adds that no beaches in Malé or Hulhumalé allow bikinis.

If you are staying at a guesthouse or taking an excursion to an inhabited island, look for the designated tourist beach. Secret Paradise, a Maldives tour operator, says swimwear belongs on uninhabited and picnic islands, sandbanks, dive boats, resort islands, and screened-off tourist “bikini beaches,” and that acceptance varies from island to island. In practice, that means one breathable shirt and one longer skirt or loose trousers in the suitcase earn their space.

When to go, and what the weather means for your bag

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, the northeast monsoon, the dry season, runs from January to March, the southwest monsoon, the wet season, runs from mid-May to November, and December and April are transition months. Average temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (about 77°F to 90°F) all year. The dry season can also arrive early or late: Edition.mv reported that it began on December 17, 2025, the earliest start in five years, after a record-late onset on January 2, 2025.

If you are booking now for winter, you are most likely packing for heat and strong sun rather than rain. A wet-season trip calls for the same suits plus quick-dry fabrics and a light layer for squalls. In either season, the suits that dry fastest on a villa deck are the ones you will reach for.

Sun, reefs, and the sunscreen question

For many visitors, snorkeling is half the point of the Maldives, which is why the sunscreen you choose matters. NOAA’s National Ocean Service notes that some chemical UV filters, oxybenzone among them, can harm aquatic life including corals, and calls mineral sunscreen a better option. Its list of concerns also includes nano-sized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and NOAA’s simplest advice is to wear UV-protective clothing and seek shade between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Secret Paradise likewise recommends a rash guard or T-shirt for snorkeling.

Our take is to let fabric do most of the work: a long-sleeve shirt or UPF layer for boat days and snorkeling, a hat with a real brim, and a mineral sunscreen for what is left uncovered. Our beach club etiquette and SPF guide covers how to wait before dressing so sunscreen does not mark your suit.

Shop the Maldives packing list

We checked each listing below on Amazon the morning this went live. Every item is chosen for the seaplane math: light, packable, and useful on more than one day. Sizes, colors, and stock change, so confirm yours before checkout.

Summersalt Sidestroke One-Piece

Summersalt Sidestroke one-shoulder one-piece swimsuit in white for a Maldives packing list

The one-shoulder suit to keep in your hand bag. A single asymmetric strap looks polished on the villa deck and at the pool bar, so this is the suit you will be glad to have if your checked bag catches a later seaplane.

  • Best for: Arrival-day swims and resort lunches
  • Pair with: The gauze shirt worn open and the SOJOS sunglasses
  • Fit note: 78% recycled polyamide and 22% elastane per the listing. Check the size chart; the size we checked ships in four to five days.

FLAXMAKER Black-and-White Bow One-Piece

FLAXMAKER black one-piece swimsuit with an oversized bow at the bust and white piping

Black with crisp white piping and an oversized bow across the bust: the suit that reads as an outfit at a sunset bar. The listing describes full coverage at the chest and removable soft cups.

  • Best for: Pool-to-dinner evenings
  • Pair with: Loose trousers and flat sandals
  • Fit note: Shell is 85% polyester and 15% spandex with a mesh panel per the listing.

Aleumdr One-Piece Swimdress with Pockets

Aleumdr one-piece swimdress with split hem in a teal floral print

A split-hem swimdress with built-in shorts and pockets for the days you want more coverage, like a picnic-island lunch or a sandbank trip. On its own, it is not local-island bathing dress, which means arms and upper legs covered; pair it with the shirt below.

  • Best for: Excursion days and more coverage by choice
  • Pair with: The gauze shirt and the Ultra Adventure hat
  • Fit note: The listing says the fabric is not see-through when wet. Its fabric details are listed two different ways, so check the panel on the page before you order.

Long-Sleeve Gauze Button-Down Shirt

Women's white long-sleeve gauze button-down shirt worn open over a top

The most useful piece in a Maldives suitcase. It covers your shoulders in Malé and on local islands, works as a beach cover, and protects your arms on the boat. The long sleeves roll up, and the high-low hem sits just below the hip.

  • Best for: Malé, local-island visits, and the seaplane dock
  • Pair with: Any suit on this list, or wide-leg trousers for dinner
  • Fit note: The listing’s description says 30% linen and 70% cotton, but its spec table lists cotton, polyester, and polyamide, so treat it as a light gauze shirt rather than pure linen. Amazon notes it is often returned for a loose fit, so check the size chart.

Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Body Lotion, Travel Size

Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 sunscreen lotion in a 3 fl oz travel tube for a Maldives packing list

A zinc-based SPF 50 in a 3 fl oz tube, which fits the 3.4 oz carry-on rule so it can ride in your hand bag. The listing says to reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and every two hours.

  • Best for: Hand luggage and snorkel days
  • Pair with: A UPF layer and the hat
  • Fit note: Expect a white tint at first; the listing says that is normal for this mineral formula.

Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat

Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure UPF 50+ sun hat in light gray with neck cape and chin strap

Not a resort-boutique hat, and that is the point. It is rated UPF 50+, folds flat into a bag, and has a neck cape plus an adjustable chin strap that helps it stay put in the wind on a speedboat.

  • Best for: Boat days, sandbank trips, and snorkel breaks
  • Pair with: The swimdress and the sunglasses
  • Fit note: Comes in multiple sizes with an internal sizing system per the listing.

SOJOS Polarized Rounded Square Sunglasses

SOJOS black polarized rounded square sunglasses

Lagoon glare is real, and polarized lenses cut it. These are inexpensive enough that you will not mourn them if they go overboard, and the listing says they block UVA and UVB with UV400 lenses.

  • Best for: The seaplane window and villa-deck reading
  • Pair with: Every suit on this list
  • Fit note: Plastic frames with metal hinges per the listing; they come with a pouch and a cloth.
